Dear East Middle School Families,
I hope this finds you well. It is an exciting time as East Middle finds the rhythm of the 2nd semester.
I'd like to discuss several items in this week's message:
Instructional Time / Bathroom
We are missing too much instructional time by going to the bathroom. Several students are abusing the permission to be out of class, and I need to make some adjustments. I wanted you to be aware of what we will begin communicating to students. Please know, our goal is NOT to prevent students from using the bathroom. Our goal is to use our time more wisely and reduce the amount of instructional time being missed.
When can students go to the bathroom?
Every student has permission to use the bathroom at will between 8:00 and 8:30. Every student is allowed to use the bathroom at will between classes all day long. Every student is allowed to use the bathroom during their lunch period.
When will we say "no" to a bathroom request?
Unless it is an emergency, we will begin saying "no" during:
First period
Fourth period (sixth grade only)
Fifth period (7th and 8th grades)
The first and last ten minutes of each class period
SBDM Parent Representative Election
We will be holding an election for a parent representative to serve the remainder of the 24-25 school year on the Site-Based Decision-Making Council. This Council meets monthly to discuss decisions about our school. SBDM councils are made up of teachers, administrators, and parents. They are responsible for setting school policies and making decisions that improve student achievement.
If you are interested or would like to nominate someone for this position, please send me an email as soon as possible - ryan.allan@shelby.kyschools.us.
The election will occur the last week of January.
Grades
I just wanted to remind you about the changes to the EMS grading system this year. Now that we are in the second semester, every student has a completely clean slate. The grades earned this second semester will stand alone. At the end of the year, the 1st-semester grade will be averaged with the 2nd-semester grade to give us each student's final average for the year.
Extended School Services
EMS is starting after-school ESS opportunities for certain students. It is by invitation only. For example, we will invite a student who has a failing grade in a particular class. If you are interested in having your student be invited to ESS, please reach out to your student's Advisor. If your student is invited to ESS, you will be notified.
Safety Drills
State law dictates that we conduct all of our safety drills after a long break. I want you to know we take these drills very seriously and will be conducting all of them over the next several days.
Thank you for all you do. Thank you for the opportunity to educate your student. We are getting better every day.
In partnership,
Principal Allan
